NURSING CULTURAL EXPERIENCE

Purpose and Objectives :

·        to raise awareness in our communities of the situation in developing countries

·        to administer “hands on” basic nursing care in poor remote areas where people have minimal to no access to health care

·        to evaluate health care in a developing country

A NURSING Trip:

Duration of a typical trip is 7-8 days, usually during spring break at the college.

The work group consists of an experienced leader, nursing students (RPN & BScN), RNs, other health care professionals and supporting people in our community.  The role of the RNs and health care professionals is to assist the students with assessments, decision making & implementation of nursing care.  The total number of trip participants is approximately 20 people.

Typical Activities: Nursing care may be delivered in a variety of settings-sugar cane plantations, rural areas, door to door visits and malnutrition centres.  Observational experiences may include tour of a local hospital, public health unit, leper hospital and orphanage.

Preparatory discussions are conducted bimonthly to fully prepare the applicants for the experience and to promote group dynamics.

Accommodations are at a basic hotel or retreat.  Special cooks are hired and bottled drinking water is available.

A period of reflection and discussion is scheduled each evening.

Donations of medicines such as Tylenol, vitamins, analgesics etc. are required to operate our clinics.  Money collected is used to buy other required medications and medical supplies.

Follow up:  The experience continues after the trip with a reunion approximately 4-6 weeks after the trip to critique the experiences, share memories and to discuss future opportunities.
