WHY HAITI ? WHY DOMINICAN REPUBLIC ?

Haiti and the Dominican Republic share the same island of Hispanola. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. In some areas almost half of the children die before the age of 5 years. Of its eight million inhabitants, 50 per cent of adults are illiterate, and only 40% of school aged children are able to go to school. In parts of the Dominican Republic the situation is not much better, as many suffer from extreme poverty and underdevelopment as well. The majority of people living in both of these countries do not have access to the basic necessities of life (clean water, proper food, education, health care, etc), which many of "us" take for granted everyday. As you will find, when you visit Haiti and the Dominican Republic, the spirit within these people is truly amazing. Their sufferings are evident, yet they possess a gift which is hard to describe. These simple, beautiful people live each moment of their lives as it comes and never take a moment for granted. They love the beauty of life and "we" can learn so much from their humble existence. It is so important when visiting these countries, that we forget what "we" know and instead become like a child, and let the experience and the people of Haiti and the Dominican Republic lead us, teach us and help us grow
